Summer is coming soon, and you know your HVAC unit will be running a lot to keep your home cool. This is especially true if you live in an area that gets hot temperatures much of the summer. Fortunately, there are many things you can do to get the air conditioning system ready so it will keep you and your family comfortable no matter what the temperature is outside. 

Have it Maintained

Contact an HVAC contractor to come to your home to maintain the air conditioning system. This is important as they may see problems that you are not aware of. Some problems get much worse if not repaired so this can save you money. 

The contractor will check the air conditioner filter and replace it or clean it, depending on what type of filter you use. This is important as the air filter is what the air flows through. If it is clogged or dirty the airflow is reduced which can make your system run more to keep the temperature at the right setting. Over time, this can cause your unit to break down much faster. 

The contractor will check the condenser and evaporator coils. Dirt can build up on both coils over time. If the contractor finds they are dirty they can clean the coils for you. If the coils are not cleaned this can reduce the airflow so your home will not stay as cool as it should be. 

There are aluminum fins on the condenser and evaporator coils that can easily get bent. If this happens, this reduces airflow through the coils. The contractor will use a fin comb to straighten them. 

Things You Can Do

There are many things you can do to keep your system running and in good shape during the summer. First, check the air filter on your own at least once a month and replace it if needed. If you have pets in the home or if someone in your home smokes, you may need to replace it more often. 

You also need to check outside to make sure there is nothing blocking the HVAC unit. There may be built-up leaves, sticks, or other debris. If so, these things can block the fan which reduces the airflow. If you have constant problems with things piling up next to the filter you can install a small gate around it. If so, make sure an HVAC contractor can easily get to the unit, if needed.
